Fukuoka Airport opened its second runway in March 2025, significantly expanding its takeoff and landing capacity. As a result, there has been a surge in new international routes and the resumption of existing routes, with 2025 seeing activity in various destinations including Busan, Taoyuan, Shanghai, Kaohsiung, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bangkok.

Fukuoka International Airport Corporation has set a medium-term plan to expand to 38 international routes by fiscal year 2028, and is focusing on attracting routes to Southeast Asian resorts, cities in China that are not yet served, and routes to Europe, the Americas, and Australia. Improvements to the infrastructure for receiving passengers are also underway, including extending the concourse and adding more check-in counters.

Meanwhile, Hawaiian Airlines' Fukuoka-Honolulu route is currently suspended, and its resumption is eagerly awaited. With Kyushu's strong inbound tourism demand, there are high expectations for the opening of new routes to Europe and the Americas.
