Nagano is the capital of Nagano Prefecture. Iiyama is a small city in a heavy snowfall area in northern Nagano Prefecture, near the border with Niigata Prefecture. The Hokuriku Shinkansen's Iiyama Station opened in 2015, making it accessible from Tokyo in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Several ski resorts are concentrated in the area encompassing Nabekura Plateau, Mori no Ie Ski Resort, Madarao Plateau Ski Resort, and one of the five peaks of Northern Shinshu, making it popular with skiers seeking powder snow. Takato is the central city of the Ina Valley in southern Nagano Prefecture. Located in the Ina Valley, nestled between the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains) and the Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains), the cherry blossoms at Takato Castle Ruins Park (often called the best cherry blossoms in Japan) are a major attraction for spring tourists. Local specialties include ramen (a local dish of lamb and steamed noodles) and zangiri (horse sashimi).

This mountain village in southern Nagano Prefecture is known for having "Japan's best starry sky." Hirugami Onsen (a hot spring resort along the Achi River) and the Starry Sky Night Tour (Star Village Achi) are the main tourist attractions, and stargazing from the ropeway at night is popular nationwide. Jibuzaka Kogen Ski Resort is also nearby, and in winter, many travelers combine skiing with hot springs and stargazing. It is accessible from the Sonohara Interchange on the Chuo Expressway and is relatively close to Nagoya, about 1 hour and 30 minutes away.
