Oita is the capital of Oita Prefecture and the third largest city in Kyushu. Beppu is a symbolic "hot spring paradise," boasting the largest number of hot springs and the highest volume of hot spring water in Japan. Hita City was a thriving commercial center during the Edo period, serving as a territory directly controlled by the shogunate.
