Utsunomiya is the capital of Tochigi Prefecture and is nationally famous as a mecca for gyoza (it ranks among the top cities in Japan for gyoza consumption). It's a central city in northern Kanto, accessible from Tokyo in about 50 minutes via the Tohoku Shinkansen. Popular tourist attractions include the Oya Stone Museum (a fantastical underground quarry site for Oya stone) and Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park. It's also a starting point for sightseeing in the Nikko and Nasu areas, and has plenty of business hotels.

Nasushiobara is a city in northern Tochigi Prefecture where the Tohoku Shinkansen's Nasushiobara Station is located. The Shiobara Onsenkyo (a hot spring resort area with over a dozen hot springs along the Hoki River, and the Shiobara Monogatari Museum) is a popular hot spring destination easily accessible from the Tokyo metropolitan area for a day trip. It is also a base for accessing Mount Nasu and the Nasu Highlands, and Itamuro Onsen (a health resort with partnerships with Baden-Baden, Germany) is located nearby.

New Hotel in Nikko City

Nikko is an international tourist city in northern Tochigi Prefecture, home to Nikko Toshogu Shrine (a World Heritage Site), Futarasan Shrine, Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Oku-Nikko (Yumoto Onsen). It is extremely popular with foreign tourists and can be accessed directly from Asakusa and Shinjuku via the Tobu Nikko Line and JR Nikko Line. Kinugawa Onsen (a hot spring resort in a valley lined with hot spring inns) is also located within Nikko City. It is also a base for several ski resorts, including Nikko Yumoto Ski Resort and Hunter Mountain Shiobara.
